Northampton Old Scouts 54 Leighton Buzzard 19
Leighton could not get into second gear as they lost the last league game of the season against a
strong Old Scouts team who finished third in the league. Leighton kicked off but the kick went
straight into touch. From the resultant scrum the home side picked ran down the blind side to put
the first points on the board with only minutes played. Northampton Old Scouts put 3 converted
tries on the board in the first ten minutes while Leighton struggled to get their hands on the ball to
stop the surge and put their marker on the game.
However, Buzzard’s defence came into its own and the visitors managed to force a few errors into the
home team game. A penalty in their own 22m area allowed Buzzard to clear the ball down to the
halfway line. From the line, a catch and drive put the home team on the back foot and the ball was
spread wide to allow young Ben Cullen to go over the visitors first points. Try was converted by Brett
to bring the score to 21-7 in the middle of the first half. The remainder of the half was a difficult
watch for the traveling supports as the buzzards struggled to get out of their own half and as a result
the halftime score was Old Scouts 28 Buzzards 7.
The second half was more of the same with two quick tries from Old Scouts to extend their lead
Buzzards were unlucky when a break down the left wing was stopped when two Scouts players
clashed heads and had to leave the pitch. From the resulting scrum Buzzards picked up and Irwin
was heading for the line but the referee called them back as he felt he had got in the way of a Scouts
tackle. The break from the second scrum was not as successful and the Buzzards attack died out.
With ten minutes to go and after Scouts had stretched their lead to 54-7 Buzzards took a quick
restart and this was picked up by Irwin in his last league game for the club to go over and score.
Converted by Brett this brough the score to 54-14 . Buzzards now saw how well they could play and
were attacking from all angles. Captain Forsythe managed to get over the line but was adjudged to
have been held up. A few minutes later Kempster got the ball on the wing and won the chase from a
kick ahead to score the final points of the game to make the final score 54-19
Leighton Buzzard now await the draw for the Papa Johns Community Cup which will take place in
