Former school teacher Sandra Carter is the new holder of Leighton Buzzard golf club’s Croxford Cup, winning by the narrowest of margins in a two-way tie with club colleague Barbara Rickard.
Both Barbara and Sandra, Immediate Past Captain of the Ladies Section at the Plantation Road club, carded 37 points in their 18-hole round, with the winner decided on “countback” on the points scored over the last nine holes.
It was proud former Grannies Salver winner Sandra, 20 years a member of the club of which husband Brian is an ex- Captain and President, scoring 21 points on the back nine holes compared to the 19 carded by Barbara.
Val Brown, another former Ladies Captain finished third with 36 points, a shot clear of Niki Clark, with Sue Preston, Sandra Bellis and Joyce Young heading a chasing pack with 34 points.
Val Smith won the nine-hole competition with 18 points, four clear of Cicely Goldsmith, Janice Hintner and Elsa King.
[] Leighton’s inter-club team suffered a 4-2 reverse at Millbrook, witrh Christian Lester and George Elford and club Vice Captain Tim Mitchell and his nominated successor Stuart Mills winning for the Buzzards.
[] In a competition which began over six months ago, Russell Cohen and Ben Willis have won Leighton’s Winter League knock-out, beating Darren Alexander and Kamil Shah in the final. Early stages of the event are played in leagues, with the winners of each league qualifying for knock-out rounds , Russell and Ben beating Mark Knight and Derek Shaw in their semi-final while Darren and Kamil beat Tony Brinded and Craig Custance.
