FATHER AND SON WIN GOLF TROPHY….

A prestigious club trophy has been won by father-and-son golfers at Leighton Buzzard’s Plantation road course.
Former club Captain Adrian Stephenson and son Edward, a former club champion and past Junior Captain carded 47 points to win the coveted  Frank Clements trophy by the narrowest of margins …. a better score on the back nine holes after Simon Goodall and Chris Yirrell finished with the same number of points.
The trophy is in memory of Frank Clements, a long-time secretary of the Leighton club, its Captain in 1964 and its President ten years later. Son Simon followed in his boot steps as Captain in 1981 and President a decade later.
Architect Mark Knight and vehicle repair specialist Derek Shaw are the new Captain’s Cup champions. They carded 45 points to beat Tony Brinded and Craig Custance by a shot, with John Mckay and Tim Mitchell third with 41 points.
Colin Fox won Leighton’s April midweek stableford with an impressive 45 points, three clear of Daniel Waite, with John David pipping Chris Canney for third place after both finished with 41 points.
There was a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard in the Ladies Challenge Cup medal, with former champion Rosalind Miles beating Michelle Plummer and Jackie Stimpson on countback after all finished with a nett 76…. a shot clear of Carolyn Chamberlain and Sandra Bellis.    Elsa King won the ladies nine-hole competition with 17 points, two clear of Mary Johnson, Norma Venner and Tayla Shepherd.
Seniors Captain Andy McDonald and club vice Captain Tim Mitchell got Leighton off to a flying start in their inter-club match against Beds & County won 5-1 with two matches halved.
David Hawkins and David Miles, Roy Virgee and Derek Read, David Sweetnam and Martin Flynn and Chris Figg and Barry Nappin followed with wins for Leighton, with Terry Lingham and Ian Rimmer and Paul Bishop and Keith Griffiths halving their matches.
But the winning streak ended with a 4-3 defeat at South Beds, with Andy McDonald and Peter Gadsden,  John Clavey and Terry Lingham and Paul Bishop and David Sweetnam returning winning cards for Leighton and Graham Pellow and Keith Griffiths halving their match.
