Gale force winds, a sudden rain storm, flooded course and a 40-minute shut-down failed to dampen the spirits of big-hitting Jamie Stone as he completed back-to-back club championship wins at Leighton Buzzard’s Plantation Road course on Sunday.
The 28-year-old quality engineer, pipped for the trophy iu a sudden-death shoot-out two years ago, was crowned Club champion last year and retained the trophy after a 36-hole championship weekend involving 140 club members.
Jamie, a 2-handicap golfer who works for company specialising in the production of fuel systems for F1 and high performance cars, completed his first round in a nett 73, and was unfazed by Sunday’s storms which sent players scurrying for cover.
The unwanted break left him carding a nett 76 for his second round, a score beaten only by runner-up Phil Coumbe, whose first round 77 gave him a total of 151, two shots behind winner Jamie. Carl Mcdougall took third place with a nett total of 155, four shots clear of Mike Smith and Graham Magilll.
Four players tied for Leighton’s Handicap Trophy, each carding nett 141’s, with the final placings being determined on countback over the last nine holes. School teacher John David, 38, who only joined the Plantation Road club in January emerged the victor, with David Evans runner-up, David Nero third and Stephen Maddison fourth. Justin Moss took fifth place with a nett 143. For John, a self-taught golfer and father of three now playing off a handicap of 13, it was his first club trophy since taking up the sport.
Suturday’s best gross score was carded by Stuart McLeod with Peter Lawrence hitting the best nett score of 67. Sunday’s best gross score was hit by scratch golfer Colin Beesley with Ashley Garner carding the best nett score of 68.
Leighton Seniors shared the spoils with a 4-4 draw against the Bedfordshire, with Ian Rimmer and Tim Martin, Graham Pellow and Steve Marriott, Derek Read and Terry Lingham winning their games, with halves by Harry Adam and Phil Rickard, and Andy Mcdonald and Roy Virgee.
Ian Alexander, Stephanie Howlett, David Newby and Margaret Osborne teamed up to win Leighton’s McKinnon Trophy, pipping Christine Bateman, Sandra Bellis, Martyn Garrod and Graham Robinson on countback after both teams carded a nett 50. Third place went to Christopher Figg, Virginia Gillett, Stephen Maddison and Michelle Plummer with a nett 52, a shot clear of Terry Dell, Patti Marriott, Graham Pellow and Joan Waples, and George Bashford, Margaret Browning, Lynne Newnham and Phil Rickard..
Nine-handicap golfer Graham Magill won Leighton’s August Midweek Medal, carding an impressive 44 points to beat Alex Sandham and Gary O’Connell, with Voja Savic a point adrift in fourth place. David Nero and Graham Goodge headed a chasing pack with 38 points.
