TURKEY IN THE BAG FOR ROBIN AND CARMEN…

Turkey will be abundant in the Lawes’ Linslade household this Christmas – for Robin and wife Carmen have just won a 15lb locally bred whopper after topping the table in a Leighton Buzzard golf club competition.
And there’s another 27 to be won for top finishers in other competitions if they can be re-scheduled in the run-up to Christmas after the current pandemic lockdown ends in early December.
IT manager Robin and wife Carmen won the first basted beauty in the club’s Mixed Turkey medal foursomes with a 38 point haul, two points clear of three other couples in a 19-strong field.
“It was one of those days when, if one of us hit a bad shot, the other hit a cracker,” said Robin, a 60-year-old 23-handicap golfer who just weeks ago won the delayed 2019 Winter League trophy, teaming up with Ian Woodman to beat Christian Lester and Joe Butlin in the final.
Wife Carmen, is also no stranger to winning golfing silverware. In her 15 years as a member of the Plantation Road club, she has won the Ladies Winter foursomes, Olive Wood trophy and, Grannies Salver and been Captain of the 100-strong Ladies section.
Turkeys were also been won by Mixed foursomes runners up Olivia Campbell and Ed Stephenson and third placed Chris Figg and Anne Tilbury.
[] Christine Rimmer has presented trophies to winners of competitions and other events during her year as Ladies Captain.
Ros Miles, in her first year as a member, collected the Championship Cup and the Croxford Cup; Lynne Newnham was presented with the Grannies Salver and Jackie Phelps received the Rosewear Bowl and the Most Improved golfer award. Other trophy winners were Jackie Stimpson (Handicap Cup); Patti Marriott (Captains Cup) and Anne Tilbury (Olive Wood Trophy).
Judy Ammon won a prize for the most birdies in the season; Barbara Rickard for the most reduced handicap and Vivien Vale was awarded the nine-hole merit prize.
There was a special prize too for 10-year-old Sommer Chan for her “exceptional performance” in the Ladies Handicap Cup played in September. A pupil at Linslade Academy, Sommer, who took up golf at the age of six, shot a nett 78 playing off a handicap of 19.  She now plays off 17.7.
The new Ladies Captain is former school teacher Sandra Carter, supported by her Vice Captain Lesley Bednarek.
