After years working abroad, ‘Big John’ McKay returned to the UK and his beloved Leighton Buzzard golf club – won a trophy and got pipped for another.
Scottish-born truck engineer John teamed up with Ian Woodman to win Leighton’s Christmas foursomes and a sporran full of cash with 38.5 points, a shot clear of Kent Waterman and Paul Ellam.
John also finished runner-up with David Banwell in Leighton’s Daily Mail foursomes, losing to Ian and his regular playing partner Kent Waterman.
Forty points was good enough to earn David Womack and Justin Moss a place in the final of Leighton’s Captains’ Cup competition. They join Tim Mitchell and Nick Tingey, Peter Sheridan and Simon Thornton, Dharm Naveen Diwaker and Steven Tyas, Phil Coumbe and John Ager, John Tarbox and Graham Hazell, Alan Smith and John McSweeney, and Darren Valentine and Steve Richardson in the April 4 final shoot-out. Other qualifying rounds have yet to be played.
