HIGH FIVE FOR LEIGHTON GOLFING PALS…

Two golfers who teamed  up to play competitions at Leighton Buzzard’s Plantation Road course have scooped finished top in five competitions this year, three of them in the last few weeks, and won the right to represent the club in the finals of a nationwide competition next year.

Equipment tester Ian Woodman and paint sprayer Kent Waterman joined the Leighton club last year and have been regular playing partners in club competitions ever since.

And after carding a nett 66 in the Daily Mail foursomes qualifier, they will represent Leighton in the regional finals of the nationwide event – with lower handicaps than when they started.

For Ian won a monthly medal earlier in the year by five shots,  carding a nett 63 and finished top in the October Midweek stableford beating Joe Butlin on countback after both carded 43 points.

Kent meanwhile, won the July stableford with 41 points and was top finisher in the October D-Day Landings Medal with a nett 68, two shots clear of Alan Smith.

It’s a personal victory against adversity for Ian, 54, as he had to pack in sport years ago due to a serious health problem which required brain surgery.

Says Ian: “Getting fit and joining the Leighton club was the best thing I’ve done; it’s such a friendly club and a delight to play.”

In other competitions, Neale Proud beat former Captain and ex-President John Preston in the final of the Seniors Trophy – just two days after John and wife Sue lost to Margaret Browning and Steve Marriott in the final of the Davis Cup. But Neale lost in the semi-final of the Groves Trophy to former club junior and Forresters Charity Day  winner Lewis Scott, 28, who went on to beat Ben Irvine in the final.

Presidents Putter champion Billy O’Neill has won the Grovebury Medal, beating Colin McLeod, while Stephen Boud was top scorer in the summer stableford series, with Ed Stephenson runner-up.

Jackie Stimpson won the Ladies Medal Cup with a two-round score of 157, beating Angela Samuels by five shots, while Judy Ammon won the Ladies October stableford with 35pts, with Josie Sheridan runner-up with 34pts, a shot clear of Patti Marriott and Judy Malpass.
