Canoe Club at National Sprint Regatta

This weekend saw the second of this year’s National Sprint Regattas at Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham, opening on Saturday with Storm Hannah creating a challenging and strong headwind for our paddlers.

Leighton’s Charlie Smith, Max Pickering and Jack Rayment competed in a number of sprint races over the weekend, ranging in distances from 5000m down to 200m and in boats for a single paddler (K1), two paddlers (K2) and 4 paddlers (K4).

The weather on Saturday led to a number of races being cancelled or postponed, but of those races that did go ahead Jack raced in a K4 with paddlers from other clubs over 500m, getting through to the final and coming third overall.

Max raced heats in the top group of u18 boys over 1000m, 500m and 200m on Saturday and Sunday getting through to the finals in a mix of K1 and K2 boats.

The highlight of Charlie’s weekend was winning his 5k selection race on Sunday and is now waiting to hear whether he will be selected to represent Great Britain at the Canoe Sprint World Cup in Poznan, Poland at the end of May.

A small but valiant team representing Leighton Buzzard nationally – well done boys!
