Two men who joined Leighton Buzzard golf club when Mentmore hit the financial buffers nearly four years ago, will be representing the Plantation Road club in the final stages of a national competition this Spring.
Information technology business relations manager Steve Hammond and former sales representative Peter Lawrence won Leighton Buzzard’s Daily Mail Foursomes event, and are now waiting to hear who they will face in the regional heats of the competition.
Steve, 51, and Peter, 65, both 14-handicap golfers, have already enjoyed a little luck, having been given a bye in the final stages. Both had been members at Mentmore for several years without playing together, only becoming playing colleagues when they joined the Leighton club. Steve won Leighton’s handicap championships last year, and while Peter won the Presidents Vase whilst at Mentmore, his Daily Mail win with Steve was his first at Leighton.
“We’re having a great time at Leighton and look forward to representing the club in what we hope will be a successful run in the national Daily Mail Foursomes,” said Peter.
Steve Boud and Barry Kent have qualified for the final of Leighton’s Captains’ Cup, beating David Hanley and Trevor Stone with 24 points on the back nine after both pairs had carded 45 points, one clear of Justin Moss and Kent Waterman, while Nigel Barnes and Steve Paine also qualified on countback after a three-way tie with 45 points. Neil Laming and Simon Thornton and Dave Embury and Simon Thornton lost out by the narrowest of margins after the Barnes-Paine pairing carded 15 points on the last six holes.
Lila Garrod won Leighton Ladies five clubs and a putter competition with an impressive 37 points, three clear of Judy Ammon.
Less than a week after England’s hope of a rugby Grand Slam were shattered by Wales, former England Captain, Barbarian, British Lion and current Chairman of World Rugby, Sir Bill Beaumont will regaling Leighton’s sporting fraternity on Friday at a sold-out Gents Evening.
